Fall Check List
Fall is a good time to clean the pond if there is more than a couple of inches of debris on the bottom for the following reasons.
- Then the fish do not have to hibernate in muck
- The fish are stronger to handle the cleaning
- The water is warmer to work in
Also pond cleaning is a good time to thin down the fish populations
Cut back hardy plants so leaves do not decompose in the pond. Some plants have interesting winter foliage and can be left until before spring growth begins. Remove tropical plants to store in side as house plants.
Clean the biological filter and waterfall filters. Upper ponds and filters in the waterfalls all collect debris through the season. It is good to clean these out once a year so the filter works at optimum performance when it is time to start up in spring.
Cover the pond with netting to prevent leaves from filling up the pond and streams. We have many sizes available
Add sludge digester and bacteria through the winter season. Many of these products are capable of working during the winter months and will help keep the pond healthy.
