Fish Stress From Frozen Pond
How did your pond survive our coldest winter in 20 years?
We saw many pond owners experience broken pipes and leaking ponds. However it looks like the biggest toll this winter season incurred is on the fish. Ponds that stayed frozen over for too many days may have fish that are now showing signs of stress. Stressed fish exhibit red streaks in the fins and body and act lethargic on the bottom of the pond. When our water temperature maintains 50 degrees start feeding fish with wheat germ food. And then switching to medicated food if fish show the red streak in the body and fins. Add salt to the pond to help the slime coat on the fish and discourage certain parasites. Melefix and Pimafix use natural tree products and are good for wounds and fungus on the body.

Spawning Incubator
The spawning incubator is used to protect fish eggs and fry. Add the incubator to the pond when fish exhibit spawning activity. The fish will lay eggs on the outside of the floating basket Then the basket can be turned inside out to make a nursery for eggs until they hatch . This allows you to leave the fry in the pond 's natural environment still protected from larger fish and reducing loss of fry. The natural pond environment provide the proper food for the fry and overall is easier to maintain. When the fish are large enough they will swim out of the basket and join the others.
